New complete door skin plant

The project consisted of a green field facility to produce HDF door skin boards, the first one of its kind in Canada.

Unique process in Canada

This plant, which utilised by-products from a nearby sawmill was designed to produce 5.5 million boards per year.

Performance achieved above expectations

The project involved the following system: thermal energy system, raw material handling and metering, gluing, refining, fibre drying, forming line, press line, sawing line and painting line. The owner, Sacopan Inc. awarded HMI the turnkey contract for this project.

The challenge

  • Design and build the first HDF door skin manufacturing facility in Canada.

  • Meet or exceed the expected production requirements.

The result

  • New plant capacity 5.5 million boards/year.
  • New system including :
    - Raw material handling and metering
    - Forming line, press line, and painting line
    - New biomass boiler
  • Plant output exceeded by more than 25 % the planned production.
