Hydro-Québec Magdalen Islands

Cap-aux Meules, Magdalen Islands, Qc

New 66 MW diesel-fired electric station

This major project at Hydro-Quebec's Magdalen Islands facility involved the replacement of 21 generating sets with six powerful new sets, each with a capacity of 11.5 MW.

Project realized without power interruption

The installation of the sets in a new building avoided any interruption of service at the existing site. HMI was also responsible for building a fuel and oil recovery basin and installing noise reduction equipment.

The challenge

  • Replace a 21-set generating facility with a new and more efficient six-set unit on the remote Magdalen Islands of Quebec, without disrupting service.

The result

  • Enhanced reliability, record efficiency.
  • Improved fuel efficiency and flexibility to burn Bunker “C” oil.
  • State-of-the-art environmental protection.
