Complete conversion of a pulp and paper mill

This major project at Malette's facility in St-Raymond-de-Portneuf consisted of converting the paper mill for the production of MFC (machine finished coated) paper.

Secondary treatment system

It also involved the construction of a new APMP (Alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping) pulp plant, the addition of an online coating and calendering system for the No. 2 paper machine, as well as the design and construction of a primary and secondary effluent treatment system.

The challenge

  • Modernize an ailing paper facility without major production stoppages.
  • Work to be realized in a tight schedule and under strict environmental ruling to meet Quebec province’s regulation.

The result

  • New 200 metric tons/day APMP pulp plant.
  • New on-machine coater and Softnip calendar.
